ABARES has released its Fishery Status Reports 2026, providing an independent assessment of the biological and economic status of Commonwealth-managed fisheries.
ABARES Acting Executive Director David Galeano said the Fishery Status Reports (FSR) 2026 indicate that Commonwealth fisheries continue to be well managed.
“The FSR play a critical role in improving understanding of Commonwealth fisheries and supporting their long-term sustainability,” he said.
“Of the 107 stocks assessed, the FSR 2026 found 66 stocks were classified as not overfished, 79 were not subject to overfishing, and 65 met both classifications.”
The report also highlights several challenges facing sustainable fisheries management, including declining data quality and availability for stock assessments, climate change and illegal fishing.
These challenges can increase uncertainty and make it more difficult to monitor and respond to impacts on fish stocks.
“The findings highlight the importance of ongoing monitoring and assessment to support adaptive management and help ensure the long-term sustainability of Commonwealth fisheries,” Mr Galeano said.
