$13.3 million from the CLP Government’s $100 million Flood Recovery Fund will be invested to construct the Katherine South Flood Levee.The new levee will protect an additional 210 homes and businesses in Katherine South.Once complete, the combined function of the Katherine North and South levees will provide greater flood protection for Katherine residents, mitigating flood impacts up to a 1 in 20-year flood event.
The Finocchiaro CLP Government will invest $13.3 million from the $100 million Flood Recovery Fund to further flood proof Katherine in their year of growth, certainty and security, protecting an additional 210 homes and businesses in Katherine South.
The construction of the Katherine South Flood Levee means both Katherine North and Katherine South will have Flood Levee protection.
Once complete, the combined function of the Katherine North and South levees will provide greater flood protection for Katherine residents, mitigating flood impacts up to a 1 in 20-year flood event.
Extending from the Western side of the Katherine Country Club in Pearce Street to the Southern tip of Katherine South on the Victoria Highway, 3km of levee infrastructure will be built.
Minister Responsible for the Flood Recovery Fund and Member for Katherine, Jo Hersey, said the construction of the new Flood Levee will be welcome news for flood affected residents in Katherine South.
“In the March 2026 floods, we saw how well the Katherine North Flood Levee worked until the flood waters exceeded the 1 in 20-year flood level,” Minister Hersey said.
“That’s why we’ve already spent $4 million on upgrades to the Katherine North Flood Levee from the Flood Recovery Fund and are committed to building the Katherine South Flood Levee.
“This will give greater confidence to residents and businesses in Katherine South who will have greater flood protection from future flooding.
“Whilst we can’t control the weather, we can plan and prepare for future flooding events.”
The levee will comprise of 1.6-metre-high earth embankments, a 1.5-metre-high wall levee, and road raisings on Murphy Street, Murray Street, and Bicentennial Road.
The project will also maximise a $9.1 million Australian Government contribution.
