2483 new JCU places and more to come

When university applicants check their offers on the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) website this morning (Wednesday 15 January) 1052 will discover an offer of a place to study at James Cook University.

While 4731 prospective students made studying at JCU their first preference this year, a total of 2483 offers have been made to date (combining offers made in today’s round and offers made earlier). Additional offers will be made between now and Orientation Week in February.

Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Chris Cocklin reminded applicants they still have further options after this major round of offers.

“This is an exciting time in every student’s life. Take your time to consider your offer, including whether your preferences have changed.

“If you have any questions about the choices available to you, or the best way to pursue your goals, I encourage you to contact our advisors. They’re ready to provide all the advice and assistance you need.”

Professor Cocklin said JCU continued to see growth in science and health-related areas.

“Our biggest group of offers in Cairns is 98 places in Nursing Science, and in Townsville it’s 208 places in Medicine.

“We’re also seeing promising and steady growth in courses including Marine Science in Townsville and engineering in Cairns.”

Deputy Vice Chancellor, Students, Professor Laura-Anne Bull looked forward to welcoming new students in March.

“We congratulate you on your personal achievement and on your decision to study at JCU.

“You’ve chosen a university that combines a focus on hands-on learning with real strengths in research, and inspiring study locations. Enjoy the rest of your break – you have a big year ahead.”

JCU received 2,286 first-preference applications for Medicine; 405 first-preference applications for Nursing; 386 first-preference applications for Dentistry, and 268 first-preference applications for Veterinary Science.

Professor Bull said JCU would be making further offers in most courses later this month and again in February.
