$5 million to further transform Murray Bridge Racing Club

The transformation of Murray Bridge Racing Club into one of Australia’s leading elite horse training facilities continues with the commitment of a further $5 million from the Marshall Liberal Government for further upgrades.

The funding, as part of the 2020-21 State Budget, will help create up to 150 on-course stables and a 70-metre equine pool at the club’s Gifford Hill facility.

The project will create an estimated cumulative economic value of $63 million over five years while creating 105 construction and ongoing jobs.

Thoroughbred Racing SA (TRSA) is also contributing in $1 million for the project.

The announcement follows the recent completion of the club’s new $505,000 uphill sand training track, which was facilitated under the Marshall Government’s $24 million racing industry stimulus package.

“The money we’ve invested into the racing industry since coming into government is now close to $30 million and demonstrates once again how serious the Marshall Government is about partnering with South Australian racing to drive a vibrant industry,” Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing Corey Wingard said.

“When combined with the projects we are supporting across metropolitan, provincial and country clubs, you get a picture of how we are helping to support and grow South Australian jobs in the racing industry.

“It’s exciting to watch how the industry is responding to the investments we are making and the benefits that are being delivered across the state.”

TRSA Chair Rob Rorrison said the new Murray Bridge projects represented “an integral component” of the organisation’s long-term strategic planning for the SA’s racing industry.

“Being able to offer stables and a state-of-the art equine pool will help us deliver a full on-course service at Murray Bridge, giving trainers a new option and further alleviating the cost of training in the state,” Mr Rorrison said.

“It is a key part of growing horse numbers in South Australia which, in turn, will drive further investment and growth in the industry.

“We are extremely appreciative of the State Government’s ongoing support.”

Murray Bridge Racing Club Chair John Leahy said the announcement was “fantastic news” for the club.

“Since opening our new Gifford Hill facility last year, we have already seen a significant increase in awareness from trainers from around SA and interstate,” he said.
