$60 million boost for McGowan Government’s social housing program

  • Additional multi-million investment brings total spot purchase budget to $105.1 million, to target 270 spot purchases this financial year
  • 408 spot purchases have already reached settlement since the beginning of the program
  • Record social housing investment to deliver up to 3,300 social housing dwellings throughout WA

Housing Minister John Carey has announced a further $60.1 million boost to increase the number of social housing dwellings across Western Australia.

The additional $60.1 million – drawn from the Social Housing Investment Fund, a $750 million investment to boost the State’s social housing by 3,300 properties over four years – will boost the State’s Spot Purchasing program to $105.1 million, and enable the acquisition of about 270 properties across WA this financial year.

The Spot Purchasing program involves selective acquisition of established homes and off-the-plan dwellings – as well as buy-back of shared equity homes – which are then repurposed by the Department of Communities for social housing programs.

This financial year 126 dwellings have already reached settlement, and this number is expected to grow to about 270 by the end of the financial year.

The McGowan Government is investing a record $2.4 billion over four years to deliver 3,300 additional social housing dwellings and homelessness services across WA.

As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:

“My message is clear – our Government is using every lever it can to bolster the supply of social housing.

“Our Government has been investing in and delivering social homes through our innovative modular and timber frame build programs and through our Spot Purchasing Program.

“This additional funding will provide a further boost to the State’s social housing stock and will provide homes for the most vulnerable members of our community.

“This is part of the McGowan Government’s $2.4 billion investment in housing and homelessness services in WA over the next four years – including the delivery of around 3,300 social housing dwellings, as well as refurbishments and maintenance work to many thousands more.”
