$6.7 million Carrick Hill visitor centre plans revealed

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

The final design for the exciting new $6.7 million Carrick Hill Visitors Centre Pavilion has been revealed.

Following agreement on the design of the proposed new pavilion, the Australian and South Australian governments today released images of the development that will be constructed by project partner, Cook Building.

Set to commence construction early next year, the project will deliver a multi-purpose pavilion to provide improved visitor services and amenities for international, national and local patrons.

The pavilion will offer a function area with flexibility to host intimate or larger-scale events, enabling the beloved venue to increase its commercial offering, while additional car parking will meet anticipated increased visitor numbers.

Located in an elevated position next to the existing visitor car park, the contemporary building will have a lift to improve accessibility, and will capture views to the west and north, including the original Basket Range sandstone manor house, across the city, out to the sea.

The event space, with western views, will accommodate up to 200 people, and the casual dining café with indoor and outdoor seating also provides views to the 1939- built house.

The local and broader community will also benefit through improved facilities and access to recreational walks.

The development will bring increased opportunities for volunteer involvement across the various activities on site as well.

The project is funded by the Australian Government and the State Government.

The Carrick Hill Development Foundation also provided $3.2 million through their fundraising and donation network.

The project is scheduled for completion in mid-2023.

Quotes attributable to Catherine King:

The Australian Government is proud to be contributing to the enhancement of this historical building and surrounds in the Adelaide Hills.

This project is an exciting investment in Adelaide and its surrounding areas.

Quotes attributable to Andrea Michaels:

The State Government is delighted to be supporting the expansion of Carrick Hill’s facilities, which will see a new generation of visitors discover the incredible beauty and history of this famous South Australian treasure.

The social history of the property is significant – once home to Ursula and Bill Hayward – founder of the Adelaide Christmas Pageant.

We look forward to building work commencing on this fantastic new pavilion space, and once completed, welcoming back the many Carrick Hill supporters, as well as first-time visitors drawn by this new development.

While the house is filled with historic arts, crafts and architectural features, the gardens and lawns are a place for people to gather with family and friends and are a magical place for children to explore.

Quote attributable to Carrick Hill Chairman Peter Kennedy:

In addition to the generous support of the Federal and State Governments, Carrick Hill is extremely grateful for the very generous support of our donors and the Carrick Hill Foundation, who together have contributed $3.2m, almost half of the total funds for this project.
