$9 million upgrade improves safety on Snowy Mountains Highway near Adelong

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

Work is now complete on critical road safety improvements to the Snowy Mountains Highway intersection at Black Creek Road in Adelong.

The $9 million project is part of $36 million in road safety improvements for the Snowy Mountains Highway, jointly funded by the Albanese and Minns Governments under the Road Safety Program.

The project started in September last year and involved widening a 2.1-kilometre steep and winding section of the Snowy Mountains Highway between Black Creek Road and Back Sandy Gully Road to improve safety and sight distance through the bend.

The upgrades include:

  • a wider road that allows drivers to safely turn at the intersection
  • improved sight distance at the bend for motorists
  • two kilometres of safety barriers
  • audio tactile line markings, also known as rumble strips, to increase driver awareness and reduce run-off-road crashes.

With the safety upgrades now complete, motorists are advised that the nearby Darlow rest area has now reopened.

As part of the national Road Safety Program, the Albanese and Minns Governments have collaborated closely to enhance existing road infrastructure and reduce fatalities and serious injuries in the state.

By investing in targeted upgrades, both governments are helping create a safer road network for local communities, freight operators and the thousands of visitors who travel through the region each year.
