A Safe, Secure Place To Call Home

  • Minister for Housing

New homeless accommodation in Ashwood will give a stable, secure home to vulnerable Victorians.

Minister for Housing Richard Wynne today officially opened Brian O’Donnell House which will provide long-term, affordable accommodation, particularly for women and children fleeing family violence.

The $200,000 Brian O’Donnell House is an initiative of the Victorian Homeless Fund, supported by the Housing Industry Association as well as generous donors including the builder SJD Homes.

The three-bedroom, single storey home has been built on vacant land contributed by the Department of Health and Human Services.

The Women’s Property Initiative (WPI) will manage the property and provide ongoing support to tenants.

Families will be able to stay at the home for as long as they need, giving them a safe place in which to build a new life and provide stability and security for children.

The house is named in honour of Brian O’Donnell, a long-serving member and past Victorian President of the Housing Industry Association and a proud member of the Victorian Homelessness Fund.

The Andrews Labor Government has invested over $1 billion in homelessness and housing support since coming to government – including the $45 million Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Action Plan to intervene early, get those at risk of homelessness housed quickly and help them maintain that housing.

As noted by Minister for Housing Richard Wynne

“Ending homelessness takes an entire community – we need to work together to make sure all Victorians have access to the safe homes they deserve.”

“We’re delighted to join together with the Victorian Homeless Fund, the Housing Industry Association and the Women’s Property Initiative to deliver this new homelessness accommodation.”

As noted by Member for Burwood Will Fowles

“We all know that vulnerable Victorians, especially women and children, deserve a safe place to call home and Brian O’Donnell house will help many families in years to come.”
