A Summer of alfresco dining ahead for Kingston
Summer is almost here, and Kingston’s restaurants, cafes and bars have taken to the streets and parks to welcome back diners.
New pop-ups and alfresco dining options are springing up all over the city and there’s no better time to enjoy the warm weather and support Kingston’s wonderful local traders.
Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said it was exciting to see local restaurants, cafés and bars all buzzing again with diners, just in time for Summer. “Council has been working with local businesses to help them expand their outdoor dining offering wherever it can be safely established, whether that’s setting up in our parkland, taking over laneways or side streets or extending their seating onto adjacent footpaths,” said Cr Staikos.
“We want to help our businesses thrive again and so we are trying to make the process of applying for outdoor dining permits as quick and smooth as possible, so they can welcome more diners back to their cafes and restaurants.”
Moorabbin-based Big Pig Little Pig as been able to block off part of Ebden Street for 12 hours on the first Saturday of every month for an outdoor dining pop up, their very own ‘Street Party’. Council supported Big Pig Little Pig with the development of their Traffic Management Plan.
Braeside Brewing on Governor Road proposed using part of the neighbouring George Woods reserve for an outdoor dining pop up on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The popular brewhouse will be supported by other local restaurants who will be coming in to provide the food for those enjoying the picnic style dining area.
Mordialloc’s Sunny Boy Beach Club Restaurant was able to create an outdoor dining space in a section of Peter Scullin Reserve. The restaurant has now set up its Summer Rose Garden for punters to enjoy a meal while soaking up the sun and views of the beautiful Mordialloc foreshore.
Council is also supporting the establishment of a number of parklets through its expression of interest process by providing financial support to those businesses to establish the required safety measures for the parklets.
To further support local business recovery, Council will provide a 25% reduction in annual renewal fees for Health and Food registrations for the 2021 calendar year, providing some relief to businesses likely to continue under restricted operating conditions into next year.
Kingston businesses are encouraged to take advantage of the many options available to establish outdoor dining areas for the temporary service of food and drinks outdoors.
