A visit to Canberra in Sydney

Department of Defence

The family and friends of HMAS Canberra’s ship’s company and NSW government personnel attended an open day in late May as a thank you for their support during this year’s Kakadu Fleet Review.

The guests had the unique experience of arriving at the ship via landing craft before being greeted by Canberra’s Commanding Officer Captain David McPherson, who welcomed them on board and gave them a quick brief about the ship and her role in the Royal Australian Navy.

The government personnel were special guests due to their integral support of Navy during the Kakadu Fleet Review on April 21. Director General Fleet Review Captain Tony Raeside noted how valuable NSW government support was, which included harbor security, crowd control and logistics planning.

In a special honour, Navy’s 125 birthday photo collage was screened on the sails of the Sydney Opera House.

“We couldn’t have done the Fleet Review without the absolute support of the New South Wales government,” Captain Raeside said.

“I’d also like to thank all of our government members’ families, who certainly gave up a lot of valuable family time leading up to the event.”

‘When we deploy, we do it without hesitation because we know we have the support of our families.’

The guests were taken on tours around the ship and shown such areas as the ship’s power plant, the sickbay, galley and the bridge. In each area, a member of the ship’s company was on hand to explain their workplace and role in keeping the ship running.

Later, on the light vehicle deck and the flight deck, guests participated in hands-on activities and displays, including first-aid practice on the Oscar dummies and an opportunity to use the fire hose.

Sergeant Dustin Arentz, a member of the Sydney Water Police, brought his family to the ship for the open day.

“The Navy has put on an excellent show. The kids have had a great time; some firefighting, looking at drones and weapon systems, and the ride on the landing craft, it’s been a very good day and we’re very thankful,” Sergeant Arentz said.

After a barbecue lunch supplied by Canberra’s on-board catering team, Captain McPherson thanked the attendees for their continued support of Australia’s Defence personnel.

“It was great seeing everyone come out today. It was an amazing opportunity to open our doors to those who were instrumental in helping us celebrate our Navy earlier this year,” Captain McPherson said.

“I am also happy that we had the opportunity for the ship’s company to show their families their workplace and second home. When we deploy, we do it without hesitation because we know we have the support of our families.”
