Campbelltown’s Aboriginal community’s cultures and stories will be included in the development of the city’s future public spaces as part of the draft Our Voice Our Place Aboriginal Interpretation Strategy.
The community is invited to have their say on the draft strategy, which would require developers to consider incorporating Aboriginal themed artwork, place naming, plantings and other cultural features when designing buildings in a public space.
The draft strategy was created in consultation with around 150 Aboriginal community members and includes ideas for exciting potential future cultural projects.
Campbelltown has the one of the largest urban populations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Sydney, with 5696 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people calling our city home.
“This innovative strategy is the first of its kind in NSW and the opportunities for how it could be used to enhance our public spaces are endless,” Mayor George Brticevic said.
“It is important that the history and stories of our local Dharawal people are reflected in the built environment of Campbelltown,” Cr Brticevic said.
“It is equally important that the modern culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their diversity is also reflected through this process,” he said.
