Private Healthcare Australia becomes Australian Health Funds Council

Private Healthcare Australia has today become the Australian Health Funds Council (AHFC), unveiling a new name and identity that better reflects the role of health funds in Australia’s healthcare system.

The Australian Health Funds Council is the national peak body representing 21 health insurance funds, which provide cover for 15.3 million Australians. Health funds play a vital role in helping Australians stay well, manage illness and receive healthcare when and where they need it.

More than half of all Australians (55%) have some form of health insurance, including 12.8 million with hospital cover. By helping Australians access treatment in the private system, health funds help relieve pressure on public hospitals.

In 2025-26, health funds paid $27.8 billion towards healthcare services for their members. Private health insurance funds approximately two-thirds of planned surgery procedures and 53% of hospital admissions for mental healthcare. Health funds also contribute more towards dental care than all Australian governments combined.

The role of health funds is also expanding well beyond traditional insurance products, with many offering services designed to help members stay healthy, manage chronic conditions and access care in more convenient and affordable ways.

Depending on their fund and policy, members can access services including health and disease screening, genetic testing to help guide medication choices, GP telehealth consultations, preventive health programs and hospital-in-the-home care. Many funds also offer arrangements to reduce or eliminate out-of-pocket costs for eligible hospital treatment.

AHFC Chief Executive Officer Dr Rachel David said the new name better reflects the contribution of health funds and the organisation’s role in representing the sector.

“Australian Health Funds Council says clearly who we are and who we represent: the health funds that help millions of Australians access the healthcare they need.

“Health funds do much more than pay hospital bills. They are increasingly helping Australians stay healthy, access treatment sooner and receive care in their homes and communities.

“Australia is fortunate to have a strong mixed public and private health system that gives people choice and helps ensure healthcare is available to those who need it.

“As our population ages and demand for healthcare grows, health funds have an increasingly important role to play in making care more accessible, affordable and sustainable.

“Our name is changing, but our purpose remains the same. We will continue to stand up for Australians with health cover, advocate for better value for consumers and work constructively with governments, healthcare providers and other stakeholders to strengthen our health system.”

The rebrand includes a new visual identity and website, making information about health funds, industry research and AHFC’s policy priorities easier to access.
