Access and inclusion improvements noted

Almost $900,000 on capital projects to improve access within the community have been undertaken as part of Council’s Access and Inclusion Action Plan 2017-2021.

This includes the installation of more than 350 braille and tactile signs in Cairns in collaboration with Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).

Other projects included a beach wheelchair program, a new ramp into Tobruk Memorial Pool, northern beaches disability seating areas and new accessible park furniture, over 25 new CBD car parks, and accessible adult change rooms at Woree and Smithfield pools.

Future works planned for this financial year include an upgrade of the pentaque court on the Esplanade, replacement of the pool hoist at Tobruk Pool, and an upgrade of CBD car parks.

TMR’s newly formed Accessible Transport Council is also considering adopting the Council’s successful Braille and Tactile Street Name Sign – School Crossing Program as a state-wide initiative.

Work has now started on the next Access and Inclusion Action Plan, with the community urged to complete the Disability Access and Inclusion in Cairns survey, which is available on the Have Your Say page, and closes on December 17.
