ACT Government wins bicycle culture and civil infrastructure awards

The ACT Government has won a Cycling Luminaries Award, run by We Ride Australia, in the Bicycle Culture category. The awards were held last night at the Australian Bicycle Summit Gala Dinner in Melbourne.

“We want to get more Canberra kids riding and walking to school, so it’s great to get this kind of recognition of the work and support the ACT Government provides to increase active travel opportunities,” said Minister for Transport, Meegan Fitzharris.

The award highlights the work across three directorates – Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS), ACT Health and Education – in partnership with community partners, including the Physical Activity Foundation and HOBAN Recruitment.

“We have committed and invested to support school-based active travel initiatives through various programs and plans that target a range of issues. Some of these issues include cyclist and pedestrian safety, infrastructure improvements, and active travel educational materials.”

The initiatives include:

  • Ride or Walk to School program (for primary schools)
  • It’s Your Move Safe Cycle program (for high schools)
  • Active Streets for Schools program
  • School Crossing Supervisor program
  • School traffic management plans

Three more TCCS projects were recently recognised at the ACT CCF Earth Awards for excellence in civil infrastructure. The awards included:

  • Project Value $2-5 million – Northbourne Avenue Sydney and Melbourne Building Verge Improvements (Complex Civil)
  • Project Value $5-10 million – Gungahlin Bus Station and Hibberson Street Shared Zone (Guideline)
  • Project Value $10-30 million – Isabella Weir Upgrade (Guideline and TCCS)

“The TCCS Infrastructure team has worked tirelessly to deliver these projects to the community, so to win awards in three categories is an incredible achievement”, said Minister Fitzharris.
