Additional $20.4 million investment in Roebourne District High School

  • McGowan Government investing in the redevelopment of Roebourne District High School from Kindergarten through to secondary school
  • New facilities to provide greater focus on Aboriginal history, culture and language

Education Minister Tony Buti today announced an additional $20.4 million investment in the redevelopment of the Roebourne District High School.

The new funding, included in the 2023-24 State Budget, builds on the $52 million already committed to the project by the McGowan Government.

The major redevelopment will provide new facilities for staff and local students attending the school. This includes a particular focus on delivery of programs to engage Aboriginal children and a design that provides greater opportunities for all staff and students to understand and respect Aboriginal history, culture and language.

Consultation has occurred with First Nations people in the Roebourne area, including the Ngarluma, Yindjibarndi and Banyjima language groups.

Students, staff and the Roebourne community will continue to collaborate with the State Government via a community advisory committee as the project moves into the construction stage.

It is anticipated that the tender will be awarded in late May 2023, for construction to begin around mid-2023.

As stated by Education Minister Tony Buti:

“The Roebourne District High School redevelopment is an important investment in the future of local students and the wider community. Their input into the design of the new facilities will serve to inspire Aboriginal students.

“There has already been plenty of excited discussions about the new school layout and the community ideas will be fundamental to the building features, play spaces and outdoor learning areas.”

As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:

“We’re committed to building and redeveloping schools across the Pilbara region to ensure that students are receiving a high-quality education no matter where they live.

“This is just one of a number of commitments we have made recently to schools in the area which will enhance the learning experiences for students in our community and create jobs for locals during construction.”
