Affordable Housing for More Territorians

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government is ensuring more Territorians have access to more affordable and suitable housing right across the Territory.

Another milestone in Government’s Community Housing Growth Strategy has been reached with a Community Housing Provider identified to take on the management of 320 affordable housing dwellings. These properties are head leased from landlords and homeowners and are rented at 70 per cent of the market rate to eligible low and middle income earners.

A competitive tender process was undertaken and Venture Housing was awarded the contract to manage the properties, which are located in Darwin, Palmerston and Coolalinga.

The transfer of the 320 dwellings under the affordable housing scheme was a key target in the Territory’s Community Housing Growth Strategy. Through the Strategy, the NT Government will transfer more than 2,000 social and affordable housing dwellings by 2025-26.

There are key benefits to having social and affordable housing dwellings managed by community providers including:

a stronger focus on supporting tenancies with complex needs or experiencing any adverse life event;increased access to revenue and finance not available to the Northern Territory Government to enable providers to leverage and grow their portfolios; andimproved tenancy management through rigorous key performance indicators under the National Regulatory Scheme for Community Housing.
