AFL Grand Final but no reason to celebrate

Liberal Party Victoria

The loss of the AFL Grand Final and it’s iconic parade is a devastating blow to a community and city already on its knees.

With a proper plan, rapid testing and other measures, the AFL Grand Final could’ve been held at the MCG.

Instead, for the second year in a row, Victoria’s most significant cultural and sporting event has been poached interstate as locked down Victorians watch on in their homes.

The AFL Grand Final week brings hundreds of thousands to the city centre, filling restaurants, cafes, bars, retailers and other venues.

Instead of buying stock and adding staff shifts, CBD businesses are facing weeks of lockdown and uncertainty over their futures.

Under the Andrews Labor Government, Melbourne has gone from being the most liveable city in the world, instead heading towards the most locked down.

Victoria needs a new plan to get our state back to the top.

As stated by Shadow Minister for Business and CBD Recovery, David Southwick:

“After a week from hell for our CBD, another lost Grand Final is a devastating blow.

“This event brings hundreds of thousands of fans and families into our city and is a critical day for small businesses.

“We need a new plan to get Melbourne back to the place we all know and love.”
