Aggravated Robbery in Darwin CBD

Northern Territory Police have arrested a man for his alleged role in an aggravated robbery in Darwin city on the weekend.

A motorist in his 40s was approached by two men while he was stopped at traffic lights around 11pm on Saturday night. The men entered the vehicle and they drove around town for some time before parking on Smith Street, where the men left the vehicle, taking with them a bag of alcohol belonging to the driver. When confronted, the two men allegedly assaulted the victim and left him on the ground while they stole his car.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said, “The offenders found a credit card in the car, which was subsequently used 15 times, and the stolen vehicle was also involved in a fuel drive-off.

“Police located the vehicle abandoned in bushland in Driver on Sunday. A number of people were seen running from the location.”

An operation involving Strike Force Trident, General Duties and the Dog Operations Unit led police to one alleged offender, who was located hiding in the scrub by Patrol Dog Drax.

The 24-year-old man is currently in custody and police expect to lay charges of:

  • Robbery causing bodily harm
  • Obtain benefit by deception
  • Unlawful use of motor vehicle.

Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the man’s co-offenders.
