Alternative waste treatment options sought by council

To further support the Queensland Government’s new Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy, and to reduce the volume of waste sent to Sunshine Coast Council’s landfills, council endorsed a recommendation at its Ordinary Meeting on September 19 to invite Expressions of Interest for alternative waste treatment options.

Waste Working Group member and Councillor Jenny McKay supported the recommendation and believes this process will allow council to consider alternative waste treatment technologies that could harness the potential value of resources which have traditionally been discarded to landfill.

“Council is seeking solutions that will ensure collected materials are processed in the most cost effective, and most importantly, the most environmentally responsible manner,” Cr McKay said.

“The outcome of the Expression of Interest process will also help to inform the range of services that will be delivered under council’s ‘next generation’ waste collection services contract that is scheduled to start in July 2022.

“I look forward to council further implementing a diverse range of innovative solutions proposed by the resource recovery and waste management industry to help our region reduce the volume of waste currently sent to landfill.

“This is in line with our vision to be Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative.”

The Expression of Interest is now advertised on the Queensland Government Tenders website.

Council’s waste and resource management team helps residents who self-haul waste and recyclable goods to council’s facilities to separate waste streams and divert as much as possible from landfill.

Garden waste, white goods, scrap metal, e-waste, re-usable furniture, bric-a-brac, paint and a range of other re-saleable items can all be recycled at council waste disposal facilities.
