ANU looks forward to welcoming students home to campus

The Australian National University (ANU) welcomes today’s announcement that returning international students won’t have to quarantine in the ACT from January 2022 and once borders are open.

The University applauds the ACT Government’s commitment to international education and the vital role it plays in Canberra’s identity as Australia’s knowledge capital.

With recent news that interstate students will be able to come into the ACT from next month, the University is looking forward to a lively campus in the new academic year.

The ACT Government has announced that from January 2022, and once Australia’s borders are fully open, international students who are fully vaccinated with a vaccine recognised by the Therapeutic Goods Administration will be able to return to Canberra without the need to quarantine.

ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt said the announcement was “good news for our students, our classrooms, our campuses and all Canberrans”.

“We are looking forward to a great 2022,” Professor Schmidt said.

“We thank the ACT Government and ACT Chief Minister for their commitment to international education and making sure Canberra maintains its place as the nation’s knowledge capital.

“We will continue to work with the ACT and Federal governments to bring our students safely home.

“We welcome this important step to get our international students back to ANU and the ACT, once the Australian border is open to them.”

Professor Schmidt said he was excited for 2022, which promises to be a great year of on-campus learning for all ANU students.

The University currently has more than 11,500 domestic students enrolled in its study programs.

ANU has also made more than 4,000 early offers to domestic students to commence studies in 2022 and will honour offers for any student who completes Year 12.

“We are working hard to make sure all our students – both domestic and international – can safely study on our beautiful and vibrant campus from semester one 2022,” he said.

“After two years of massive disruption, next year will be a time when we can all get back to doing what we do best; learning and working together.

“We are committed to bringing back all our amazing interstate students. We’ve really missed them.

“And we are committed to welcoming more than 4,000 new students from all across the country. That’s why we will honour all their offers if they complete Year 12.

“ANU is an amazing intellectual community where great minds meet every single day. Next year promises to offer a fantastic campus experience for everyone in our community.”
