Appeal after taxi driver assaulted and robbed near Kingscliff, NSW

Police are appealing for public assistance after a taxi driver was assaulted and robbed in the state’s north overnight.

Just before 10.30pm (Saturday 14 March 2020), police have been told a woman flagged down a taxi on Turnock Street, between Elrond Road and Pearl Street, at Kingscliff.

The woman told the taxi driver, a 57-year-old man, that she was headed to Altona Road, Cudgen, where a friend was waiting.

On arrival at the location, a white hatchback pulled up behind the taxi and a man exited the vehicle.

The man struck the taxi driver in the face with a baton before the woman stole cash from inside the taxi.

The pair then fled in the hatchback and were last seen driving south on Tweed Coast Road.

The 57-year-old man suffered facial injuries and was treated on scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

Officers from Tweed/Byron Police District were notified and commenced an investigation.

As inquiries continue, officers are hoping to speak with a man and woman who may be able to assist with the investigation.

The woman has been described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, of a medium build, aged between 25 and 30, and was last seen wearing shorts and a green hooded jumper.

The man has been described as having a medium build, about 182cm tall, and was last seen wearing a grey beanie, white T-shirt and blue jeans.

Investigators are also urging any witnesses or anyone with dashcam vision in the area at the time to come forward.
