April Council meeting postponed

Greater Bendigo City Council has postponed its April meeting.

The Local Government Act requires Councils to meet in person, however Greater Bendigo Councillors felt it was not appropriate to proceed given current COVID-19 health advice.

Mayor Cr Margaret O’Rourke said the decision was made in the best interests of Councillors, staff and residents who attend Council meetings.

“We did not feel comfortable meeting as a group, particularly given the current advice is to stay home as much as possible,” Cr O’Rourke said.

“We wanted to protect the wellbeing of everyone who would usually attend the meeting as well as the broader community, particularly those who are in essential service roles, so we felt this was the right thing to do at this point in time.

“All agenda items will be held over for a future Council meeting and it is hoped we will have a solution in place soon.

“All Councils in Victoria are advocating to the State Government to make some temporary changes to meeting procedure to allow Councils to meet using technology.”

The March meeting was able to proceed as that happened prior to the current advice about limiting movements outside of the home.
