Archer’s head in sand over building inquiry

Tasmanian Labor

Minister for Consumer Affairs Elise Archer would rather dismiss the issues facing Tasmanians than support an inquiry into better protections for the building industry and homeowners.

Shadow Minister for Building and Construction Jen Butler said Minister Archer had her head in the sand over the issue.

“It has become abundantly clear that there are real issues in the building industry that need fixing,” Ms Butler said.

“We have seen the horrific experiences of Tasmanians suffering incredible stress and unnecessary financial hardship due to shonky builders and an inquiry would help us to understand the issues facing the industry.

“I have spoken to both industry and home owners who are crying out for better government oversight and protections, yet the Minister won’t support it.

“The building and construction industry cannot continue to be undermined by a handful of shonky builders.

“It’s not good enough for the Minister to have her head in the sand on this issue, while consumers and home owners continue to be frustrated by problem builders.

“The Minister needs to explain why she won’t support an inquiry on this issue. It’s clear she would rather avoid parliamentary scrutiny and remain wilfully uninformed than actually provide support and protections to Tasmanians who need it.”
