Canberra artists are set to benefit from a $324,000 investment from the ACT Government designed to drive creative projects that will support local artists and expand the Territory’s arts sector.
Minister for the Arts, Creative Industries and Cultural Events Gordon Ramsay today announced the successful applicants for round two of 2019 Arts Activities $5-50k funding.
“I am pleased to announce that we have provided more than $324,000 for 12 projects in the Government’s most recent round of our flagship arts investment program,” Minister Ramsay said.
“These projects demonstrate the breadth of creativity, talent and opportunity in the Canberra arts sector.
“Through this funding round we will see Canberra talent showcased in Spain as composer, conductor and guitarist Marian Budos presents the world premiere of his ‘Book-Concerto’ for guitar and orchestra based on Jaume Cabré’s novel ‘Confessions’.
“We will also see work from local artists Dylan Van Den Berg and Hanna Cormick come to life, with each artist previously funded through The Street Theatre’s First Seen script development program.
Hanna Cormick will work on the creative development of ‘Zebracorn’ a physical theatre work on disability, and Dylan Van Den Berg will present a new Indigenous theatre work, ‘Milk’.
“The ACT Government supports artists through different stages of career development and helps refine their works and bring them to fruition. It is exciting to see artists using the range of opportunities available to them to continue to develop their career and work in Canberra,” Minister Ramsay said.
Funding recipient Marian Budos said, “This is a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to create a new type of work with a multi-award-winning and million-copy-bestselling author with a world-wide reputation.”
Funding recipient Hanna Cormick said, “I am thrilled to be bringing Zebracorn into the rehearsal studio with this team of high-calibre theatre artists. This funding provides us with the opportunity to make time for experimentation, risk and refinement – processes that are necessary to create artworks of quality.”
Funding recipient Dylan Van Den Berg said, “I am tremendously grateful for the support from ArtsACT, which means that my work will reach its fullest expression on stage. Having my voice heard in this way is a critical step in my career as an emerging Indigenous playwright.”
More than $820,000 has been invested in local Canberra artists through these funding initiatives in 2019.
The next Art Activities $5 to $50k funding round opens on 1 December 2019.
