A recently completed housing development in Launceston is making Tasmanians living with disability feel more at home.

The Rockliff Liberal Government, is delivering four new Special Intensive Support Units (SISU) across the State, providing more appropriate, social housing for Tasmanians living with disability.

Minister for Disability Services said the Unit provides a home for two NDIS participants with high support needs, as well as their support staff.

“The SISU layout is a two-bedroom group-style home, that provides separation of the two living quarters. A common overview area will house support staff,” Minister Palmer said.

“The units have been built with residents’ requirements in mind, to allow them to receive the level of care and support they need and deserve while having a sense of independent living.”

The design consists of two one-bedroom wings containing all associated facilities and is appropriate for people with disability who have high needs.

The Launceston SISU is the second of four to be completed.

The Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to working with people with disability, the people who support and advocate for them, and the wider community.

“We are committed to building a more equitable, inclusive, and accessible state for all Tasmanians,” Minister Palmer said.

Addressing the housing needs of Tasmanians living with a disability is a key focus of the Rockliff Liberal Government’s Tasmanian Housing Strategy Action Plan.

“This includes ensuring the next milestone in the plan to deliver 2000 homes by 2027 includes more accessible homes that meet gold liveability standards for people living with disability,” Minister Palmer said.

“Well done to everyone involved in helping this fabulous new house get out of the ground. I can’t wait to see the new residents take ownership of their own special place and I wish them all the very best in their new home.”
