ATO’s Indigenous Helpline is ready for your call

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is continuing to provide dedicated support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples this tax time.

Assistant Commissioner Tim Loh explained that the Indigenous Helpline provides specialised tax and super assistance, tailored to meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

“Last year, our Indigenous Helpline was as busy as ever, receiving over 47,000 calls. Our staff are ready to make tax easier this tax time,” Mr Loh said.

The ATO Indigenous Helpline staff can answer questions on a range of topics, including what to do if you:

  • run a business
  • have a second job
  • received income from the gig economy
  • received an education scholarship or bursary
  • received a government payment

In addition to the Indigenous Helpline, the ATO has several resources to make managing tax and super affairs simpler. The ATO website has helpful content on many topics and can answer common questions about tax and super through our online services such as Ask Alex and ATO Community.

“We want Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to feel confident in managing their tax and super affairs,” Mr Loh said.

Career opportunities

For those on the look-out for employment opportunities, the ATO’s Evergreen Indigenous Pathways employment initiative has been supporting the career development of over 460 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, since 2014.
