Australia’s largest prison opens in Grafton

The new state-of-the-art Clarence Correctional Centre will start to take inmates from Wednesday 1 July 2020.

The correctional centre will have the capacity to take 1700 inmates. This includes 1000 males and 300 females in maximum security, and 400 males in minimum security.

Accommodation for inmates will range from cell units to dormitory-style accommodation and cottages with shared, communal spaces.

Inmates will have access to world-class features, including onsite medical, laundry, education, industry and multi-faith religion and cultural facilities.

The correctional centre will also have high security to ensure the safety of the inmates, staff and local community.

Minister for Counter Terrorism and Corrections Anthony Roberts said the correctional centre will create 600 ongoing positions for staff.

“The centre will provide long‐term economic opportunities through the procurement of goods and services and the extra wages it brings to the region,” Mr Roberts said.
