Australia’s own Young Ocean Photographer of the Year visits Maritime Museum

Australian National Maritime Museum

Oceanographic Magazine’s Young Ocean Photographer of the Year, Western Australian teenager Jarvis Smallman, will be visiting the Maritime Museum next week to view his work for the first time displayed at the Ocean Photographer of the Year exhibition.

Smallman, 17, was awarded the title for his image Eyes on the Prize (pictured above) which was taken several kilometres out to sea along the south coast of Western Australia. The image depicts bodyboarder Jarrad Linton surfing towards magnificent waves.

Smallman’s images have been displayed in local galleries in his WA hometown, Hopetoun, however this is the first time his images have been internationally recognised.

After leaving school in year 10 to pursue his professional career in photography, this exhibition provides Smallman with a stepping-stone to further his career as his winning image is displayed amongst the world’s leading ocean photographers.

Ms Daryl Karp AM, Director and CEO of the museum said, ‘Jarvis’ image captures such a wonderful moment of Australian ocean life, capturing the beauty, power and hopeful opportunity of the moment. Despite his age, he already has an extraordinary body of work, and this image is one of my favourites.’

Jarvis will be available in Sydney
