AUSTRALIAN COMMUNITY CALLED ON TO VOTE FOR NATION SHAPING UNIVERSITY INITIATIVES

Today the Australian community is invited to vote for their favourite university initiative in Universities Australia’s inaugural Shaping Australia Awards.

The People’s Choice component of the awards will enable the community to vote for as many of the 18 finalists and initiatives they think have had a positive impact on Australia and Australians across three categories: teaching, research and community service.

Chair of the Shaping Australia Awards judging panel, Lisa Paul AO PSM, said universities were essential parts of the nation.

“Australia’s universities are extraordinary places, full of bright and passionate individuals and teams who drive new ideas and initiatives that benefit all Australians and make our nation stronger and safer,” Ms Paul said.

“The full scale of what our universities do for the nation is broadly under-recognised, which is where the Shaping Australia Awards bridge the gap – celebrating the vast contributions made each and every day.

“I invite everyone around the country to take a look at the finalists and cast their vote on the people and projects they think have made the biggest difference to our country and communities.”

Launched in September 2023, the Shaping Australia Awards is an initiative of Universities Australia delivered in partnership with The Australian.

Universities Australia Chief Executive Catriona Jackson congratulated the shortlisted finalists.

“We put the call out for initiatives that have left a positive mark on society across the three areas universities excel in – inspired teaching, world-class research and life-changing community service,” Ms Jackson said.

“Providing a safe haven for communities devastated by natural disaster, leading the charge on Indigenous suicide prevention and transforming teaching programs to meet national skills shortages are just some of the solutions-driven approaches to real challenges evidenced in the awards shortlist.

“We look forward to showing these exceptional finalists to the Australian community over the coming months and continuing to celebrate the contribution universities and individuals within them make to the country.”

People’s Choice voting is open until 30 January 2024.
