Australian Diamonds unveil legacy at Creek Road

Members, Liberal Member for Clark

Netball champions, the Australian Diamonds, have had their highly deserved legacy immortalised in Hobart today.

Liberal Member for Clark, Simon Behrakis, joined Australian Diamonds Captain Liz Watson and Netball Tasmania CEO, Mitch Coulson, at the Southern Tasmanian Netball Association to unveil a mural marking the Diamond’s historic Hobart matches.

The mural was commissioned by Netball Australia and painted by Tasmanian artist Joel Gajda, and features World Cup Diamonds captain Liz Watson and local Tasmanian netball hero Ash Mawer.

Mr Behrakis said the mural was an important legacy of the Diamond’s first-ever matches in Hobart.

“The mural is a fantastic celebration of netball, joining the dots between grassroots Tasmanian netball talent through to the highest elite level,” Mr Behrakis said.

“Recognising the pathway in any sport is important as it inspires the next generation to not only being and staying active, but to striving for the highest levels.”

The Rockliff Liberal Government partnered with Netball Australia to bring two of three test-series matches between the Diamonds and the South African Proteas to Hobart.

“Australia had another great win last night at MyState Bank Arena following the first match in Cairns, and I hope they’re able to make it three out of three when they play their final game tomorrow night,” he said.

“What I’ve been most pleased to see during their visit is how the team has engaged with the Tasmanian community through open training sessions, netball clinics and importantly signing sessions for young Tasmanian netballers to meet, chat and spend some time with their netball heroes.”

The Australian Diamonds take on the South African Proteas in their final match of the series tomorrow night at MyState Bank Arena. Limited tickets are still available here.
