Australia’s Ambassador to Myanmar was today able to speak with Professor Sean Turnell, following extensive Australian Government advocacy for consular access to him in detention.
Professor Turnell has been detained since 6 February 2021.
Our Ambassador and Professor Turnell discussed his health, welfare and the conditions in which he is being detained.
We continue to call for Professor Turnell’s immediate release, and for his rights and welfare to be upheld.
We are pressing the Myanmar authorities for regular consular access to Professor Turnell.
We ask that his family’s request for privacy be respected during this difficult time.
