A record number of students across Western Australia have packed their schoolbags and headed to classrooms today for the start of the 2019 school year.
More than 460,000 students from kindergarten to Year 12 are expected back at public, Catholic and independent schools across the State.
Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery today visited Mount Hawthorn Primary School, whose students are among the 310,000 students who will start the school year at 812 public schools.
Students and families at Mount Hawthorn Primary School will enjoy a new $3.5 million two-storey early childhood and classroom block, where classes will take place for the first time today.
Two new public secondary schools have opened today, south of Perth. Stage one of Coastal Lakes College in Baldivis and Ridge View Secondary College have been completed, and will provide the students with state-of-the-art facilities.
Four primary schools – Oakwood Primary School, Southern Grove Primary School, Aspiri Primary School and Aveley North Primary School – will open from kindergarten to Year 6 today after opening in 2018 for kindergarten and pre-primary students.
Grandis Primary School in Banksia Grove will open with early childhood facilities and welcome students in kindergarten and pre-primary.
Water at all new schools has been tested and cleared for use.
As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
“There are a record number of students this year, with more than 310,000 in public schools alone.
“Today we have 25,000 teachers – a teacher in front of every public school class – who are keen to inspire creativity and learning in each of their students.
“I wish all students, their teachers and families all the very best for a successful and positive school year ahead.”
