Bass Coast Shire Council traineeships open for applications

Bass Coast Shire Council are again opening a round of traineeships across a range of areas within the organisation.

We had overwhelming success through 2023, with six full time Trainees who are now well on their way to completing their traineeship program.

The success of the annual program has been attributed to a combination of great mentorship, an exciting work environment and a manageable study pace that allows all our Trainees to work, learn and thrive during their time with Council.

People and Culture Trainee Em West says “The traineeship has offered me the opportunity to gain experience across all functions of the People and Culture team that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. I now know where my interests really l lie. I loved that I was trusted to lead some exciting projects and have fun while I worked and studied”.

Our 2023 program strengthened our partnership with national disability support service and government agency ‘Job Access’, who were able to provide advice and guidance on workplace modifications, that enabled us to adapt for the needs of our applicants. This positive experience has helped shape how we engage with existing Council employees and for future applicants who may have varying needs and abilities.

Bass Coast Shire Council is eager to repeat the success of the 2023 program, providing an opportunity to build a diverse and inclusive workforce, and applications are now open for interested persons to apply for our 2024 Traineeship intake.

With continued support from group training authority ‘Westvic’, the 2024 Bass Coast Shire Council Traineeship program will offer five successful applicants the chance to build their skills and experience and contribute toward their future career goals in a supportive and structured environment.

For 2024 Council offers available Traineeships in Arts & Culture, IT, People & Culture, Tourism & Business Development, plus new for 2024 Building Administration. Successful candidates will be enrolled in a Certificate III course in a range of subjects including business administration, live production and technical services, tourism or IT Networking.

In 2023 we introduced our first Tourism and Business Development Traineeship. Trainee Sarah Barrot says “The traineeship opened up so many opportunities for me to learn and gain experience in an industry that I am passionate about. Not only did I get insight into different departments withing BCSC, but I was also lucky enough to take part in the Ken Hore Tourism Mentoring Program, which gave me the opportunity to be part of tourism projects. I even had the chance to speak at the Destination Phillip Island – Experience Phillip Island conference, and manage the Visit Bass Coast Instagram account.”

Council offers trainees the same flexible working benefits enjoyed by staff, plus access to apply for internal vacancies toward the end of their contract. If you feel that you could offer the enthusiasm and commitment to undertake one of the Traineeships in 2024, don’t delay submitting your application via our training partner – Westvic.

For over 20 years, Bass Coast Shire Council have successfully offered traineeships to people within our region, providing pathways into long term employment in local government and beyond. With many prior Trainees still within the organisation, you will have the opportunity to speak with and learn from other employees who may have started out just like you.
