Bayside Chamber Orchestra at Brighton Town Hall

An afternoon of beautiful music from Bayside very own Bayside Chamber Orchestra.

Bayside Chamber Orchestra’s forthcoming concert at the Brighton Town Hall includes a first performance of a new work for the chamber ensemble inspired by the transformation of the Elsternwick golf course into the Yalukit Willam Nature Reserve.

Chain of Ponds, by local composer Simon Bailey and based on his piano piece of the same name, uses the colours of woodwind and string instruments to evoke the sounds and atmosphere of the new reserve.

“The idea for the piece started during lockdown, when we were only allowed out for two hours and confined to a 5km radius. I would walk past the old golf course at least once a week. As I watched the earthworks and the ponds taking shape, and native plants and trees being replanted, I started to imagine how it was all going to look and feel when the water started flowing, the new trees and shrubs started to grow, and native birds flocked back to the area,” Simon said.

“Now, a couple of years later, it has exceeded expectations – it’s become a wonderful place to wander around. So, I see Chain of Ponds as a sort of anthem, celebrating restoration of our urban green spaces”.

Members of the Bayside Chamber Orchestra will perform Chain of Ponds, together with works by Sibelius and Melbourne composer Tom Campbell, at Brighton Town Hall on Sunday 20 August 2023 at 3.00 pm.
