Rugby League World Cup: Bring the passion, keep it safe

Police are reminding Rugby League fans supporting their teams this weekend that celebrating sport and cultural heritage must be done safely, lawfully, and respectfully.

Showcasing support for your side should not compromise people’s safety or the wellbeing of local residents.

Inspector Sila Fagaesea Siaki, Tāmaki Makaurau Pacific Responsiveness Manager, says fans can show their pride while respecting their communities.

“Throughout the tournament, Police have witnessed individuals putting themselves and others in harm’s way with high-risk behaviours, including running into roads, poor driving choices and public intoxication.

“Those thinking of engaging in those types of behaviours are urged to stay home.”

The expectations are clear:

  • Communities should not be impacted by loud stereo systems and excessive horn use. Loud noise at unsociable hours may result in infringement notices.
  • Poor driving choices, including blocking intersections, creating excessive engine or exhaust noise, or driving in a manner which places people in danger, won’t be tolerated.
  • Keep your flags outside your vehicle and your passengers inside it. Drivers are responsible for any unrestrained passengers.

Inspector Siaki says Police will continue to maintain a visible presence at gatherings throughout the country.

“Police thank the vast majority of supporters who celebrate responsibly. We encourage anyone attending gatherings to do so with safety, courtesy, and consideration at front of mind.

“We want supporters to get home safely, and at a reasonable hour.”

Good luck to the teams competing this weekend!
