Be on the ball to get the best priced fuel this Grand Final weekend

SA Gov

With many South Australians on the move this weekend, make sure you’re getting the best priced fuel with real-time fuel pricing.

The long weekend is the perfect time to explore our beautiful state and we’re expecting lots of people will make the trip by car to Melbourne for the AFL Grand Final so we’re encouraging motorists to use real-time petrol price monitoring apps to make sure they are getting the best price.

According to the RAA, real-time petrol price monitoring is estimated to have saved South Australian motorists $342 per year on average.

Under the fuel pricing information scheme, fuel retailers are required to report their prices to a central database within 30 minutes of changing the price at the pump.

Drivers can then access free fuel price information via fuel price apps including Petrol Spy, Motor Mouth, the RAA app, SA Bowser: Should I Fuel?, Fuel Price Australia, ServoTrack and Pumped, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.

This week, CBS inspectors have been targeting service stations within regions which are popular tourism destinations as well as on the route to Melbourne.

Inspection locations include:

* Southeast

* Riverland

* Barossa Valley

* Clare

* Flinders Ranges

* Upper Yorke Peninsula

* Far West Coast

* Fleurieu Peninsula/ Southern Hills

* Metropolitan Adelaide

Petrol station operators face penalties of $649 ($550 plus $99 Victim of Crime levy) – or fines in court of up to $10,000 – especially if they have ignored previous warnings.

Consumer and Business Services has conducted more than 2060 inspections and issued 302 warnings and 22 expiations totalling more than $14,000 in fines.

The long weekend is the perfect time to explore our beautiful state and with lots of people making the trip by car to Melbourne for the AFL Grand Final, I want to make sure people are getting the best priced fuel.

We know cost of living pressures are continuing to bite and using the real-time petrol price monitoring apps is the best way to ensure you’re not paying more at the bowser than you should.

If the price at the pump doesn’t match the price on the app, please report it to CBS.

RAA always encourages motorists to shop around to find the best deal on fuel – it could save them hundreds of dollars a year.

A survey of RAA members showed people using the real time fuel pricing feature in the RAA app saves around $28.50 per month or $342 per year on average.

With 70,000 users accessing RAA’s real-time fuel pricing app per month on average – our research shows an estimated average community saving of around $24 million per year.

Over the last 12 months the real time fuel pricing feature on the RAA app has been accessed 3 million times and 8.2 million times since its inception in March 2021.
