The City of Greater Bendigo is seeking community feedback as it prepares a heritage study which will cover Strathdale, Flora Hill, Spring Gully, Kennington and part of Golden Gully.
This is stage one of the Bendigo South East Heritage Study and the community is being asked what post settlement places, landmarks and features should be identified, celebrated and heritage protected in the future.
City Director Strategy and Growth Steve Hamilton said these suburbs were part of the former Shire of Strathfieldsaye and a Heritage Gap Analysis undertaken in May 2019 identified areas where heritage studies needed updating.
“Some areas have not been subject to any formal heritage studies and only some Bendigo South East areas were included as part of the Former Shires of McIvor and Strathfieldsaye Heritage Study undertaken in 2009,” Mr Hamilton said.
“This is stage one of the Bendigo South East Heritage Study and the aim is to ensure that as these areas grow and develop, valued heritage places are retained, protected and celebrated.
“I encourage people who live, work or who have knowledge about these urban areas to tell us what they think are important places, features and landmarks that need protecting in Strathfieldsaye, Flora Hill, Spring Gully, Strathdale and Kennington and parts of Golden Gully.
“As these specific urban areas grow and develop, the City wants to ensure that heritage places important to the local community are protected and enhanced for future generations.”
Information from the community will help the City to:
- Understand whether any places need to be investigated for potential heritage significance
- Find out about the places that the community values and why, to understand what makes these areas distinctive
- Increase the City’s knowledge and understanding of heritage places that exist
Community members can share their knowledge and feedback on the City’s engagement platform Let’s Talk through a brief online survey and an interactive map. Submissions close on Friday October 8, 2021.
