Better Waste: Residents consider larger bins

Horsham Rural City Council is planning for next year’s transition to the Better Waste 4-Bin Service by contacting residents who may wish to upsize their bins.

Thousands of tonnes of waste will be diverted from landfill from April when food and garden organics are separated from general waste collections and an additional recycling service is provided for glass.

Currently residents have the option of having either a 240-litre general waste bin or a cheaper 120-litre version.

Considering that the waste collection will change from weekly to fortnightly with the new service, Council wants to know how many people who currently have smaller general waste bins would want to upsize to a 240-litre general waste bin.

This information will help HRCC order enough new 240-litre general waste bins ahead of the switch to the Better Waste service.

When the new service is introduced, a flat fee will be applied, regardless of bin size.

A letter was recently sent to residents who currently pay rates for a smaller bin.

Those who wish to use a larger bin when the general waste collection switches from weekly to fortnightly are asked to complete an online form or contact HRCC’s customer service team.

Residents who want to retain their 120-litre bins need not contact Council.

There will also be future opportunities for people to change their bin sizes.
