From today, visitors can book a new and unique camping experience on the beach north of Newcastle at the Aboriginal-owned Worimi Conservation Lands, as part of the Ganyamalbaa Camping Trial.
Worimi Conservation Lands Board of Management spokesperson Jamie Tarrant said the Ganyamalbaa Camping Trial (meaning “a place to camp” in Worimi Gathang language) will provide a sustainable camping experience for everyone to enjoy.
“The Board wants to provide a special place where the community can come and connect, and learn about and appreciate the cultural and natural significance of the Worimi Conservation Lands,” Mr Tarrant said.
“The camping is located within one location at the southern end of Worimi Conservation Lands and offers 15 beach-camping sites located just behind the dune that fronts the beach. People are reminded that camping is not allowed anywhere else in the park,” he said.
“Each campsite accommodates up to eight campers and two vehicles and includes a firepit for campers to enjoy while camping under the stars.
“Campsite bookings are essential and people can book and pay online up to 6 months in advance.
“The campsites are remote and campers must be self-sufficient, bringing with them water, firewood and a camp toilet.
“The Board will closely monitor camping. We believe camping is only sustainable if the park’s cultural and natural values are protected and its operation is financially sustainable,” Mr Tarrant said.
