Regional public airports and aerodromes across South Australia are in line for vital upgrades and improvements thanks to grants of up to $100,000 through the Support Regional Aviation Program.
The program is aimed at improving regional airport infrastructure such as runways, terminal facilities and fencing.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Corey Wingard said the initiative is a boost for regional communities.
“The Marshall Liberal Government remains committed to growing our regional economy and improving regional services,” Minister Wingard said.
“Everyone living in our regions knows how important regional airports are to local communities, improving access to vital services and making travel across the state easier.
“Regional airports are used by our farmers and often play a critical role in emergencies, such as medical incidents, giving first responders better and quicker access.
“They are also an important asset for unlocking our regions to tourists who want to explore the very best of our great state.
“This initiative has proven to be popular in regional communities, with last year’s program awarding funding to infrastructure projects at airports and aerodromes at Elliston, Mount Gambier, Port Augusta and Quorn.
“We strongly encourage all public airports and aerodromes in regional South Australia to submit an application.”
Projects can include such things as:
- Sealing and resealing of runways, taxiways and aprons
- Upgrading fencing, lighting and electrical systems
- Extending and upgrading terminal facilities
- Replacing items such as Wind Direction Indicators.
The program aims to improve regional airports to comply with regulatory requirements, accommodate changing airline fleets, support the growth of regional aviation markets, and deliver regional economic and social benefits through improved air services.
