The Gainsborough Greens bridge in Pimpama has officially opened to the public for the first time since it was constructed over 25 years ago.
The 25 metre long, two lane bridge was originally constructed in 1993 as part of the Beenleigh to Robina rail project and was originally owned by Queensland Rail.
Ownership and maintenance obligations were transferred to the City in September 2019.
More than $2 million was invested in the six month project, delivered in collaboration with Queensland Rail, Rix Developments and Mirvac.
Located between the Gainsborough Greens Estate and the Old Pacific Highway, the upgraded bridge provides a direct link for residents of the estate through to the M1 and the new Pimpama City Shopping Centre.
Divisional Councillor Donna Gates said opening the bridge to the public would help alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity within the growing northern corridor.
“The bridge provides a new access point to the Gainsborough Greens Estate, which is expected to have around 2,000 homes constructed once complete,” she said.
“It will also provide an important link for pedestrians and cyclists, encouraging active travel in the area.
“We are investing heavily in transport improvements and active transport connections in the northern corridor, to accommodate the rapidly expanding population up north.
“Today is an exciting step forward in creating better connectivity for the region.”
In addition to the bridge repairs, the project involved new road approaches, barrier and guard rail upgrades, and road resurfacing.
