A Brisbane man is due to appear in court today, charged with impersonating an Australian Federal Police officer in February this year.
The 41-year-old man was charged with impersonating an AFP officer on 18 May 2022, after officers attended his address in Tingalpa.
Police will allege the man posed as an AFP officer on 17 February 2022 when pulling over a motorist on the Gateway Motorway at Tingalpa. Using a fake police badge, he allegedly told the man he would face court action.
The man then reported the incident to the AFP, who began an investigation into the matter.
AFP Acting Commander Helen Schneider said the charges were a reminder of the seriousness of the alleged offences.
“Impersonating Commonwealth officials and the potential misuse of fake police identification is something we take very seriously, which is reflected in our investigation of the alleged incident,” she said.
“Falsely representing yourself as any kind of law enforcement or Commonwealth official is a genuine danger to public safety. Incidents like this will be investigated by police, and people convicted of these offences could face time in prison.”
The man is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court today (3 June 2022) charged with one count of impersonating a Commonwealth Public Official, contrary to section 148.1(2) of the Criminal Code 1995 (Cth).
If found guilty, the maximum penalty for the offence is two years imprisonment.
