The Crisafulli Government is delivering a place to call home for more Queenslanders, with more social and community homes and support for frontline homelessness services in the Mackay Whitsunday region in the 2026-27 Budget.
After a decade of decline under the former Labor Government that saw demand far outstrip supply with only 509 social homes delivered per year, the Crisafulli Government is on track to deliver more than 2,000 homes each year by 2028.
The Budget delivers the largest ever investment into building new social and community housing, with $5.72 billion to continue the record 6,900 social and community homes currently underway.
A $450 million boost to specialist homelessness services and crisis support, will ensure more than $1 billion is delivered for homelessness services for the coming four years.
Minister for Housing and Public Works Sam O’Connor today toured the construction site of 18 social homes, 12 of which are accessibility designed to meet the needs of seniors and people with disability, which are expected to be completed in early 2027.
This project contributes to a total of 131 social and affordable homes underway in the Mackay Whitsunday region.
Minister for Housing Sam O’Connor said the Crisafulli Government was delivering new social and community homes in every corner of the state.
“Every Queenslander deserves a place to call home – that’s why we’re delivering another record investment into building new social and community housing,” Minister O’Connor said.
“After a decade under Labor where supply went nowhere near keeping up with supply, we are unlocking land, funding infrastructure and getting more homes out of the ground, sooner.
“While Labor delivered an average of just 509 social homes a year, the Crisafulli LNP Government is now on track to deliver 2,000 social and affordable homes a year, on average from mid-2028.
“We have more than 130 social and affordable homes now underway in in the Mackay Whitsunday area, building on the 79 social and affordable homes we have delivered in the region since we were elected.
“This project in Mackay is a great example of how we are getting safe and secure homes off the ground where they’re needed most.
“Combined with our $8.6 million investment in specialist homelessness services and crisis support, it means more vulnerable people in the region will have the housing help they need, sooner.”
Member for Mackay Nigel Dalton said the Crisafulli Government was delivering more social and affordable housing across Mackay.
“Housing is one of the biggest issues facing our community, and that’s why we’re delivering practical solutions here in Mackay, not just talking about them,” Mr Dalton said.
“With almost 131 new social and affordable homes under construction and more than $8.6 million being invested in frontline housing and homelessness services across our region, we’re making sure vulnerable Queenslanders have better access to the support they need.
“This Budget is delivering for Mackay by increasing housing supply, backing our local homelessness services and helping more people find a safe place to call home.”
