The Tasmanian Government is keeping Tasmanians safe by cracking down on criminals, with the Sentencing Amendment (Publication of Criminal Activity) Bill 2026 passing the House of Assembly.
The legislation will introduce a new aggravating factor for courts to consider when sentencing offenders who publish material that boasts about or glorifies their criminal activity online.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Corrections and Rehabilitation, Guy Barnett, said the Government was cracking down on offenders who boast about their crime online or on social media.
“Our message is simple: committing a crime is unacceptable and there will be consequences for those who use social media to boast about it,” the Attorney-General said.
“We know our community expects people who commit serious offences to be held accountable and these reforms recognise the increased harm caused to victims when offending conduct is shared online.
“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we are delivering measured and sensible reform that strengthens our sentencing laws, supports victims and sends a clear message that those who broadcast their crimes online will be held accountable.”
