Burnie port upgrade mustn’t come at expense of rail safety

Tasmanian Labor
  • Port upgrade vital to growing Tasmania’s economy
  • Paid for by funds earmarked for rail network safety upgrades
  • Michael Ferguson robbing Peter to pay Paul
  • Tasmanians have been dudded by the state and federal governments over the redevelopment of the Burnie port.

Shadow Minister for Infrastructure Shane Broad said Tasmanian Labor welcomes progress on the ship loader replacement at the Burnie port but we haven’t forgotten that Michael Ferguson is raiding funds intended for rail safety upgrades.

“Labor has called on the state and federal governments to include the port redevelopment in their COVID-19 stimulus packages.

“Michael Ferguson wants people to believe he worked hard to secure federal funding for the project, and he thinks people have forgotten that promises to upgrade the port will be paid for by sacrificing rail safety.

The ship loader and rail improvements are both needed to support the recovery of North West Tasmania. Progressing one must not come at the expense of the other, and safety must be paramount.

“The government needs to find the money elsewhere or risk network deterioration, derailments and accidents in the future.”
