National is calling on Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins to clarify his party’s position on two additional taxes mooted by senior Labour personnel.
“Labour and its mates are already planning to introduce nine new taxes to fund Labour’s $18 billion hidden bill,” National’s Finance Spokesperson Nicola Willis says.
“Now it has emerged that Labour’s broadcasting and media spokesperson Reuben Davidson is proposing to introduce a levy on streaming services that would jack up the price Kiwis pay for Netflix and other streaming services and former cabinet minister Michael Wood wants to bring back his unpopular Ute Tax.
“He’s told The Herald he has been using it as “part of his door-knocking sales pitch” in Mount Roskill.
“Add to their proposals Willie Jackson’s acknowledgement on Friday that Labour is open to negotiating the implementation of a Land Value Tax with The Opportunity Party and it is clear Labour’s appetite for other people’s money knows no limits.
“Mr Hipkins should come clean about the consequences.
“The tax plans of Labour, the Greens, Te Pāti Māori and TOP will hit every household, business, student, renter, farmer, Netflix-viewer and ute-owner in the backpocket.
“Making people poorer isn’t the answer to New Zealand’s challenges. Nor will it assist with the recovery that economists say is now starting to emerge.
“New Zealand is three months away from the election, and the choice is clear. Kiwis can re-elect a National-led Government that will keep taxes low, or a Labour-Greens-Te Pati Māori-Opportunity Party Government that will implement 11 new taxes and destroy the New Zealand economy.”
