Campbelltown’s first ever inclusive playground, Variety Livvi’s Place Glenfield, has been recognised at the Australian Sport, Recreation and Play Innovation Awards, winning the Playground Design and Development Award.
The playground features a variety of inclusive play equipment, designed so that children of any age and ability can play.
The project was delivered in partnership with Campbelltown City Council, Variety – the Children’s Charity NSW/ACT and the Touched by Olivia Foundation.
“Variety Livvi’s Place was designed with the needs of every child in mind, regardless of their age or ability, and sets the tone for future playground projects in our city,” General Manager Lindy Deitz said.
“It’s a place where families can gather and siblings and friends can play together, form lasting friendships and enjoy the outdoors,” said Ms Deitz.
“This award showcases the quality of the design and construction of this fantastic park,” she said.
Council staff worked with consultant Place Design Group to design the playground while also conducting an extensive community engagement process to incorporate feedback from residents.
Place Design Group Associate Baz Richards said every design decision had been made with inclusion front of mind.
“We wanted to create a play space for children and youth, as well as parents, grandparents and carers who take their children to the space,” Mr Richards said.
“Some people face barriers with mobility, travel and even access to public bathroom facilities, so we wanted to provide an all amenities play experience that would allow for all day stays to be a reality, regardless of ability,” he said.
The $2.5 million playground was officially opened in April.
In addition to $2 million from the NSW Government, Campbelltown City Council invested $350,000 and Variety the Children’s Charity contributed $150,000.
The Australian Sport, Recreation and Play Innovation Awards which recognises individuals, not-for-profits, commercial, play, recreation and sport sectors, for their innovations to get more people active.
