Can you fit one week of waste in jar?

MidCoast Council

Keep Australia Beautiful is challenging you to ‘Contain your Waste’ for one week and send little waste to landfill.

It’s Keep Australia Beautiful Week from 15 – 21 August. This year the challenge is to reduce the waste you send to landfill. The first step is to choose a container. It could be a jar, a tub or a bucket. Next, is to fill the chosen container only with items that can’t be composted or recycled.

“The challenge is really asking us to avoid making waste in the first place, ” explained David Rees, Manager of Waste Services at MidCoast Council. “It is also asking us to learn how to recycle waste correctly. Knowing what items can and cannot be recycled will avoid recyclable items ending up in landfill.”

It seems that many Australians do not know how to properly dispose of different types of waste, including food waste. This results in excessive waste ending up in landfill which poses harm to the environment.

“I encourage everyone to take the ‘Contain your Waste’ challenge. We have information on our Council website to help you improve your recycling know-how by sorting the right thing in the right bin.” added Mr Rees. “You can also join our home compost program and avoid sending food waste to landfill, https://www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/Environment/Bins-and-Recycling/Re-imagining-our-waste/From-kitchen-scraps-to-compost or request to visit our Materials Recovery Facility to get a bird’s eye view of the recycling process.” https://haveyoursay.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/reimaginewaste/book-tour
