Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are currently at the scene after a car crashed into a truck on the Monash Freeway in Narre Warren this morning.
Investigators believe a Holden station wagon was travelling inbound at speed in the emergency lane when it clipped a truck and lost control about 7.30am.
A male passenger in the station wagon was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries. He remains in a critical condition.
Police arrested the 21-year-old driver at the scene and he is currently assisting police with their enquiries.
The Monash Freeway inbound has been closed to all traffic at Ernst Wanke Road.
Investigators are keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone that may have dash cam footage of the collision.
