This year, 14 Support Workers at Bayside Care and Support are celebrating service milestones, representing an extraordinary 262 years of combined service to older Bayside residents.
For many, what began as a job that fitted around family life became a career built on relationships, trust and the opportunity to assist people remain independent in their own homes.
Joan is marking an incredible 45 years with Bayside City Council. She first joined because the flexible hours supported work-life balance, but she stayed because every day brought something different.
“When you knock on a client’s door for the first time you don’t know whether it will be a one-off visit or if you’ll be with them for many years,” Joan said.
“You build very special relationships with clients and sometimes their families as well. I’ve met so many amazing people over the years. They have made such a difference to my life too.”
For Patricia, now celebrating 15 years, working close to home and supporting her community has made the role especially rewarding.
“You see people’s daily challenges, but you also see how determined they are,” Patricia said.
“I’ve learned to respect that many clients want to do as much as they can for themselves. Supporting someone’s independence can be just as important as helping them.”
